You may be considering chiropractic treatment for the first time in your life and wondering just what it will consist of. First of all, you will be given a thorough examination so that a course of chiropractic care can be prescribed that is specifically designed for you. This examination helps the doctor of chiropractic determine the underlying problem that may be causing pain that refuses to go away.

Depending on the nature and extent of your specific problem, a series of recommended treatments should help you feel noticeably better. After one to four weeks of chiropractic treatment, the pain for non-complex musculoskeletal conditions should typically be reduced by 40% and possibly up to 80%. The frequency of visits to the doctor of chiropractic should decrease as your pain and function improve, going from possibly two to three times a week of intense chiropractic therapy, to eventually once a month as maintenance.

Doctors of Chiropractic, otherwise called Chiropractors, will treat conditions involving back and neck pain, including shoulders and legs, with a “hands-on” approach. Two of the more common methods include:

Spinal manipulation – This is typically a high-velocity thrust applied to the targeted vertebra or joint that improves function, reduces nerve irritability, and restores range of motion in the back and neck. This manipulation, also called a “chiropractic adjustment” if often done either manually with direct pressure from the chiropractor’s hands onto the affected areas, or with a small hand-held instrument called an activator that delivers a gentle impulse force)

Mobilization. This refers to a low velocity manipulation, slow movement and stretching of the muscles and joints, and generally results in increased range of motion in the treated areas.

Doctors of chiropractic do not use drugs or surgery for chiropractic treatment. However, they do understand that there may be certain conditions that will require other conventional methods of treatment. If that is the case, further consultation will be recommended.
