Decompression Blog

Last month we discussed the condition of the muscles that can develop into chronic pain for many people. If you are in this group of people, you may end up spending a lot of energy and money looking for a low back pain cure.  There is good news!  A chiropractor can help locate the root cause of your pain. If the cause is a muscular issue, you may notice one or more of the symptoms below:

• Spasms – When the facet joints or certain other structures in the spine become injured or inflamed, the large back muscles can spasm, causing low back pain and limited movement.

• Weakness – Lower back pain that continues longer than two weeks can lead to muscle weakness. This is because the tendency is to avoid using muscles that hurt. This in turn will cause back pain to increase because the back muscles are less able to help hold up the spine.

• Stress -- Stress causes back muscles to tighten in a fight or flight response, depriving muscles of energy needed to support the spine.

• Tightness -- Patients with tight hamstrings (the large muscles in the back of the thighs) tend to develop low back pain, and those with lower back pain tend to develop tight hamstrings. This limits motion in the pelvis, transferring and increasing stress in the low back.

Muscle strength and flexibility are essential to maintaining the spine in the correct position. If the abdominal muscles are weak, the hip flexor muscles will tighten resulting in an increase in the curve of the low back. It is important to maintain proper posture so that by evenly distributing weight throughout the spine corrects muscle imbalances that will cause low back pain.

Seek the help of a chiropractor to find the underlying cause of your pain so that the right type of treatment can be prescribed for your particular problem.
