Chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a procedure in which trained chiropractic doctors apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of this treatment is to improve spinal motion and improve your body's function.

No special preparation is required before your treatment. At your first consultation, a chiropractor will ask questions about your health history and perform a physical exam, with particular attention to your spine. Other examinations or tests, such as X-rays, may also be recommended.

During a typical chiropractic adjustment, you will be placed in certain positions to treat specific affected areas. Often, lying face-down on a specially designed, padded table. The chiropractor applies a controlled, sudden force (either with their hands or a small instrument) to a joint, pushing it beyond its usual range of motion. You may hear popping or cracking sounds as your chiropractor moves your joints during the session.

Some people experience minor side effects for a few days after a chiropractic adjustment, which could include headaches or fatigue or pain in the parts of the body that were treated. How you respond to treatments depends a lot on your unique situation. If your symptoms don't begin to improve after several weeks of treatment, chiropractic might not be the best option for you.

Chiropractic adjustment is safely performed by a trained and licensed chiropractic doctor. Serious complications are very rare. However, if you have any of the following conditions, you should not use chiropractic treatment:

  • Severe osteoporosis
  • If there is numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg
  • Cancer in your spine
  • An increased risk of stroke
  • A bone abnormality in the upper neck
