In recent years, chiropractic therapy has grown in favor with clients and physicians alike. Why has it become so popular? It is non-invasive, safe, effective and gentle, a science of natural healing that activates your body’s healing power. Depending on the nature and extent of your specific problem, and following a thorough examination, a series of recommended chiropractic treatment should help you feel noticeably better. Low back pain, neck pain, and headache are the most common problems for which people seek relief.

The chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which chiropractors either use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. Also known as spinal manipulation, the goal of this procedure is to improve spinal motion and improve your body's physical function.

What are the risks of chiropractic treatment? When performed by a trained and licensed chiropractor, it is safe! Serious complications are rare but may include a herniated disk or a worsening of an existing disk herniation, compression of nerves in the lower spinal column, and/or a certain type of stroke after neck manipulation.

If you have any of the following conditions, chiropractic is not for you:

  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg
  • Cancer in your spine
  • An increased risk of stroke
  • A known bone abnormality in the upper neck

Some people experience minor side effects for a few days after a chiropractic adjustment. These may include headache, fatigue or pain in the parts of the body that were treated.

Not everyone responds to chiropractic adjustments. It will depend on your particular situation. If your symptoms have not improved within one to four weeks, other treatment possibilities beyond chiropractic should be explored. Doctors of chiropractic do not utilize drugs or surgery for chiropractic treatment. They understand that there may be certain conditions that will require other methods of treatment. If that is the case, further consultation will be recommended.
