Chiropractors often employ massage therapists in their offices because of the benefit they see in their patients who have an injury or illness that affects muscles and connective tissue. While chiropractic treatment promotes and maintains proper alignment of the bones of the spine and surrounding tissues, massage therapy focuses on releasing tension from the muscles and enhances deep relaxation.
Who benefits from massage therapy? Massage therapy can be beneficial for people of all ages and walks of life who deal with muscular pain and injuries. This could include sports injuries, or strain and injury to the soft tissues, such as those resulting from repetitive motion, or spending too much time sitting at a desk. It is also effective in helping patients with stress-related mental health conditions such as anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, digestive disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome), or those who suffer from fibromyalgia, headaches, depression, or a low immune system.
There are four common types of massage therapy:
- Swedish massage – Gentle, uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.
- Deep Tissue – Slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.
- Trigger Points – Focuses on areas of tight muscles that can form after injuries or overuse.
- Sports Massage – Geared toward those involved in sports activities to help prevent injury or to treat injuries.
Although most people can benefit from massage, it may not be appropriate if you are taking blood-thinning medication, have burns or healing wounds, deep vein thrombosis, fractures, severe osteoporosis, or severe thrombocytopenia.
