Depending on the nature and extent of your specific problem, and following a thorough examination, a series of recommended chiropractor treatments should help you feel noticeably better. Within one to four weeks of chiropractic treatment, the pain for non-complex musculoskeletal conditions should typically be reduced by 40 to 80%. The frequency of visits to the doctor of chiropractic should decrease as your pain and function improve.

Chiropractic Treatment of back pain

Doctors of Chiropractic, or chiropractors, treat conditions involving back pain and/or neck pain through “hands-on” chiropractic care, including:

  • Spinal manipulation or manual manipulation – Typically a high-velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to abnormal vertebra to improve function, reduce nerve irritability and restore range of motion in the back. This is also known as a “chiropractic adjustment.” Chiropractic adjustments should be part of chiropractor treatments early on in the care of lower back pain.
  • Mobilization. This refers to a low velocity manipulation, movement and stretching of the muscles and joints, and generally results in increased range of motion in the treated areas.

Beyond Chiropractic Treatment:

If your symptoms have not improved within one to four weeks, other treatment possibilities beyond chiropractic should be explored, such as:

  • Other skeletal or muscular problems that have not been diagnosed
  • Ergonomic stress that reproduces the back pain and/or neck pain
  • Complicating conditions that need further diagnostic evaluation or that may benefit from another type of treatment, such as hypothyroidism, or diabetes.

Doctors of chiropractic do not utilize drugs or surgery for chiropractic treatment. They realize that there may be certain conditions that will require other methods of treatment. If that is the case, further consultation will be recommended.
