If you are new to chiropractic care, be assured that what you can expect during prenatal chiropractic care is similar to the same kind of care you would receive if you were not pregnant. The goal of chiropractors is to make sure that they treat the whole person, not just a symptom of their pain or discomfort. So, whether you’re a newly pregnant mother, or you have been pregnant several times, you know that your body will be experiencing many changes, some obvious, and some not so much.

As your baby grows and your center of gravity shifts, your spine shifts too. This initiates a ripple effect, stressing your musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and enacting changes you may not link to pregnancy, such as lower back pain, joint discomfort, ligament pain, loose limbs and shifting posture. Other forms of treatment, such as stretching, massage, and hot and cold therapy, may be combined with spinal adjustments to provide you with the best relief possible from your aches, pains, and muscle tension.

You may experience additional benefits following spinal adjustments, such as:

  • Reduced nausea
  • Fewer headaches
  • Less edema (swelling)
  • Reduced sciatic pain
  • More restful sleep
  • Faster, less complicated labor and delivery

The American Pregnancy Association has found that it is typically not necessary to avoid chiropractic care during pregnancy, provided your chiropractor is trained in prenatal techniques and your OB-GYN approves. However, there are certain conditions that may prohibit chiropractic care during pregnancy, such as vaginal bleeding, placenta previa, placental abruption, toxemia, or an ectopic pregnancy. Know your body and inform your chiropractor if you start experiencing abnormal symptoms or if an adjustment doesn’t feel quite right.

When daily discomfort affects your mobility and ability to enjoy your pregnancy, discuss with your chiropractor what to expect during prenatal chiropractic care and how it can make your pregnancy, delivery, and motherhood less stressful and more enjoyable. Don’t stop treatment after delivery, but make sure your new little baby is taken care of as well by an infant chiropractor!
