There are a few patients that a chiropractor may actually recommend for back surgery to relieve their lower back pain. You may want to know how long will it take to recover from back surgery when making your decision. This will depend on your overall health, the degree of symptoms you had before surgery, and the type of procedure you have done.  Generally speaking, It can take from six months to a year for your backbone to heal.

Here is the typical process that back surgery patients experience:

• Care After Surgery – You will spend a few days in the hospital where you are watched carefully by a nurse.  You will be taught breathing exercises and a physical therapist will talk to you about exercise and movement.

• Physical Therapy -- Most people start physical therapy within 24 hours of surgery, mainly walking. You will need to continue PT after you leave the hospital. The more you walk, the faster you will heal.

• Becoming Active Again – For at least six weeks, you will be advised to not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk; use a long-handled gripper to pick things up off the floor; and not to twist or bend at the back. Because driving requires you to twist your spine to check mirrors and blind spots, you shouldn't do it too soon after surgery. Follow the advice of your doctor for any activity, driving, or returning to work.

• Follow-Up Care -- About four to six weeks after your surgery, you will go back to your doctor for a checkup, and then every few months to two years following. You may have imaging tests, like X-rays or an MRI, to see how your back is healing.

So, remember that if you are suffering from lower back pain, try chiropractic care first. You’ll be glad you did!
