Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor and a leading cause of disability. Fortunately, there are ways to help prevent or relieve most back pain episodes. Easy home treatment and the correct body posture, whether sitting, standing, walking, or working, will often heal your back within a few weeks so you can keep functioning without pain. Surgery should be the last option to treat back pain.

Here are a few ways in which you can prevent recurring low back pain:

  • Avoid excessive bed rest. If you have back pain, keep moving as much as possible, Motion aids in recovery while lying down can weaken the back muscles and make your back pain worse.
  • Practice proper posture. Poor posture, incorrect lifting or twisting motions can lead to back pain.
  • Strengthen your core. Build up your muscles by exercising and stretching. This will help reduce the likelihood of back pain.

Everyone knows the symptoms of back pain! It can range from a muscle ache to a shooting, burning, or stabbing sensation. It can also radiate down your leg, worsening with movement, such as bending, twisting, lifting, standing, or walking. Hopefully, typical back pain should improve within a few weeks with home treatment and self-care.  If not, schedule a chiropractic appointment to treat the cause of your pain.

In rare cases, back pain could mean there is a serious medical problem. If your back pain is accompanied by bowel or bladder problems, a fever, or if pain follows a fall, blow to your back, or other injuries, seek immediate care from your medical physician.
