Although lower back pain is most commonly associated with problems of the spine, did you know that inflammation, irritation, or infection of any of your internal organs in the central abdominal or pelvic region can also cause back pain? The pain is usually located near where the organ is located.

So what organs can cause lower back pain? These are the main organs that can cause pain:

  • Kidneys—Kidneys help remove liquid waste from the body through urine. If there are too many chemical substances in the urine, (more than what the urine can dilute) kidney stones can form, creating a sharp pain in the side and the lower back region as well as difficulty urinating or blood in the urine.
  • Pancreas—The pancreas plays an important role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pain from pancreatitis, which can be severe and debilitating, may start in the upper abdomen and radiate to the lower back.
  • Appendix—The appendix, located in the lower-right abdomen, is a storehouse of good bacteria. If it becomes inflamed, there can be severe pain that starts in the lower abdomen and travels to the lower back. An inflamed appendix needs to be surgically removed so it doesn’t burst, leaking causing toxins throughout the body.
  • Large Intestine—Inflammation of the large intestine (colon), or ulcerative colitis, can also cause lower back pain, as well as abdominal cramps and rectal pain.

If you’re experiencing lower back pain on a consistent basis, visit your medical doctor for a thorough evaluation. X-rays, MRIs, or other tests may be given to determine the cause of your pain. If internal organs are ruled out as the cause of pain, find a doctor of chiropractic to treat your lower back pain naturally, without addictive medications or invasive surgery.
