Are you suffering from back and neck pain? One of the most common and effective chiropractic treatments used to alleviate pain caused by spinal conditions is known as non-surgical spine decompression therapy. While some back and neck pain may require surgery in extreme cases, most patients would prefer treatment that does not require invasive surgery.

If you are considering the various types of spine decompression treatments, two big considerations for most people is the cost and the time involved. A study conducted by the UCLA School of Public Health comparing insurance claims with chiropractic coverage versus non-coverage. The study concluded that patients with chiropractic coverage had a 12% lower annual medical care cost and lower back-pain episode-related costs. These patients also required fewer x-rays, scans, surgery, and hospitalization. The study further showed that insurance members with coverage were less likely to have other life-threatening medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, and nutritional disorders.

So how effective is spinal decompression therapy? The two examples below are good indicators that a regimen of spine decompression therapy is more helpful than conventional medical treatment, such as medication or surgery.

  • Fewer neck and back surgeries are needed – A study conducted by American Specialty Health, Health Services Research, showed that patients using chiropractic care had a significant reduction in the number of surgeries, imaging tests such as x-rays and MRIs, and cost of inpatient care.
  • Significant decrease in hospitalizations – Another seven-year study compared insurance claims and patient surveys of patients using “alternative health” practitioners—primarily doctors of chiropractic as their primary care physician versus those using conventional medicine alone. This study showed that among claims with complementary and alternative medicine, there were 60.2% fewer hospital admissions, 59% fewer hospital stays, 62% fewer outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% fewer pharmaceutical costs.
